What Is the Skin Barrier?

Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Your skin barrier is your body’s built-in defence system — a vital layer that protects against dehydration, pollution, and irritation. When it’s healthy, your skin looks smooth, radiant, and calm. But when it’s compromised, you may experience dryness, redness, sensitivity, or breakouts.

At Balance & Skin, we focus on skin health at every level — starting with a strong, supported barrier. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is the Skin Barrier?

The skin barrier, or stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of your skin. Think of it as a wall — skin cells are the bricks, and lipids (fats, ceramides, natural oils) are the mortar holding it all together. This layer locks in moisture and keeps out harmful aggressors.

When balanced, your skin is:

  • Smooth and supple
  • Hydrated and resilient
  • Less prone to inflammation and breakouts

Signs of a Damaged Skin Barrier

You may notice:

  • Dryness or tightness
  • Flaky or rough skin texture
  • Redness, stinging, or sensitivity
  • Breakouts that don’t settle
  • A dull, uneven tone

Support your barrier with a simple, intentional routine. Here’s how to do it with Balance & Skin:

1. Cleanse Gently Without Stripping

Cleansing should remove impurities — not your skin’s moisture.

Use: Moisture Melt Cleanser

A soothing, creamy cleanser infused with black currant extract, Vitamin B5, melon extract, shea butter, and jojoba oil. It detoxifies while delivering antioxidant-rich hydration and restoring skin balance. Use it wet or as a dry cleanser with pads.

Key Benefits:

  • Calms and soothes irritated skin
  • Strengthens the skin barrier
  • Balances oil production
  • Leaves skin soft, nourished, and deeply hydrated

2. Exfoliate – Gently and Effectively

Over-exfoliation can weaken the skin barrier. Instead, use a gentle yet effective blend of natural exfoliants.

Use: Luminous Lift Micro Polish 1–2x per week

Infused with 6 natural exfoliators including mango, papaya, and pumpkin enzyme, this dual-action polish combines physical and chemical exfoliation. Silica and bamboo stem powder gently buff the skin, while glycolic acid smooths and refines texture. Finished with blackcurrant extract for antioxidant nourishment.

Key Benefits:

  • Removes dead skin cells and buildup
  • Refines texture and unclogs pores
  • Brightens and revitalises the skin
  • Suitable for face and body (neck, décolleté, hands, elbows, back & shoulders)

3. Replenish with Barrier-Strengthening Moisture

After cleansing or exfoliating, replenish lost hydration and reinforce the barrier.

Use: BioBarrier Moisturiser

This lightweight yet deeply restorative moisturiser features Tara Seed Extract, Tripeptides, and Vitamins B & C to soothe, restore, and strengthen your skin barrier. Designed for daily use to keep skin balanced and protected.

Key Benefits:

  • Calms inflammation
  • Locks in long-lasting hydration
  • Supports collagen and barrier function
  • Leaves skin soft, plump, and resilient

4. Always Apply SPF

UV rays damage your barrier and speed up ageing. Make SPF part of your everyday routine. (Launching soon at Balance & Skin.)
